Does CBD give you red eyes?

Medical cannabis has made spectacular advances in recent years around the world. In France, on the other hand, it must be admitted that weed users are still very often stigmatized as being “drug addicts”. As a result, smokers, vapers and other consumers of medical or recreational cannabis often want to keep a low profile. The problem: red eyes! These famous “exploded” eyes characteristic of the joint smoker. So yes, it’s true that you can have red eyes for other reasons than having consumed weed. But still, it is a distinctive sign that can make the person concerned uncomfortable. Don’t panic, solutions exist to overcome this discomfort without depriving yourself of the effects and organoleptic qualities of marijuana. And why not try a CBD product?

Why do eyes turn red when smoking, inhaling or ingesting cannabis?

Smoke from a joint (marijuana cigarette) is often the culprit for occasional eye irritation. Hence the red color they take, especially in an enclosed environment. But, it is not the only one responsible for this inconvenience and especially, not the main one.

In cannabis, there are a number of compounds that are more or less active and in varying concentrations. Among these substances, there are 3 main groups:

  • Cannabinoids such as THC (tetrahydrocannabinol, psychoactive compound), CBD (cannabidiol) and CBN (cannabinol) are the best known and most concentrated of the hundred or so listed to date.
  • Terpenes, essentially responsible for the organoleptic properties of plants (taste and smell) such as myrcene and pinene.
  • Flavonoids, essential compounds for reproduction thanks to the colors they give to

    attracting pollinators.

THC is the most concentrated naturally active compound in classic weed. It acts directly on the CB1 and CB2 receptors of our endocannabinoid system (ECS). Thus, it generates the psychoactive and euphoric effect which made its bad reputation; but not only! Among the different potentials induced by the consumption of THC, one of them is responsible for the red color that the eyes take. Indeed, the herb illegal in France or tolerated in countries open to medical cannabis, has moderate or high THC content. These concentrations cause a slight decrease in blood pressure (1) responsible for the dilation of blood vessels. The eyes are not spared by this vasodilatation, the volume of blood is greater in the vessels, and therefore more visible. The eyes then appear blood red.

While this vasodilation is sometimes a nuisance for cannabis users who prefer discretion, the THC-induced reduction in blood pressure can have real benefits. It highlights its potential positive effects (2) on diseases such as

glaucoma

degenerative pathology of the optic nerve characterized by high blood pressure in the eye.

Finally, if we put aside allergies and other rare pathologies, the last cause of red eyes is dehydration. Ocular vasodilation is the main reason for “popping eyes” but the body uses water to eliminate THC from the blood. This sample may cause slight eye irritation due to occasional dehydration.

How long do the eyes stay red?

There are several factors that affect how long a person will have red eyes from conventional cannabis use:

  • individual sensitivity: natural blood pressure, potential allergies, general health, fatigue, etc.
  • the amount of THC products smoked, inhaled or ingested
  • Cannabis varieties: THC content
  • the parts of the plant consumed: seeds, flowers, leaves.
  • the mode of absorption: smoking and vaping tend to “pop” the eyes more than ingestion.

It is impossible to give a precise duration of the “red eye” effect. However, one thing is certain: This phenomenon eventually disappears after a while.

Is this mild side effect really a problem for you? Don’t panic, it is possible to reduce the effects of eye redness or to accelerate the return to normal of blood pressure in the eye. If not, switch to CBD cannabis, 100% anti-red eye hemp!

How not to have red eyes after smoking, inhaling or ingesting cannabis?

As there are several causes of red eye, there are just as many solutions:

  • smoke: avoid smoking weed, prefer vape or ingestion.
  • Dehydration: remember to drink water from the beginning and during marijuana use.
  • vasodilatation: avoid using THC.
  • Irritation due to all these factors: chemical eye drops, physiological liquid or sunglasses!

Finally, the best way to avoid red eyes while consuming cannabis is to opt for CBD products.

Why don’t I have red eyes when I smoke?

With the “why and how” of marijuana-induced eye redness understood, it is legitimate to ask the question “why don’t I have it?” Aside from rare cases of allergies to certain compounds in the cannabis plant, smoking and dehydration (which only cause temporary redness of the eye), there is only one reason not to have red eyes after smoking weed. The latter is devoid of THC.

Smoking CBD cannabis flower varieties found on the European market such as those offered by our online shop, Bistrot CBD, will not cause ocular vasodilation. Indeed, for meet the French legislation in force, their concentration in THC is almost null (< 0,2%).

The taste, smell and presence of other cannabinoids give CBD cannabis the illusion of a traditional joint (without the psychoactive effects). However, it is strongly discouraged to smoke weed, even legal (risks due to combustion products on health)! Depending on the CBD product (seeds, flowers,
CBD oil
(seeds, flowers, e-liquid..), another mode of consumption will be preferred.
The current diversity of CBD products allows among others: vaping,

Vaporization

ingestion (cooking, herbal tea), sublingual drops and skin application.

So, how about a vape, a space-cake or a CBD herbal tea? Relaxation and guarantee without eye redness !
